Welcome To Eldred Township
Eldred Township is a quiet, rural gem tucked into the western edge of Monroe County, Pennsylvania, where the Pocono foothills meet the Lehigh Valley. It's a place of winding roads, forested ridges, and deep historical roots - ideal for those drawn to natural beauty and small-community charm. Local government services are provided to an area of 24.5 square miles with a population of 2,594 recorded during the 2020 census. There are 34 miles of Township roads and 20.7 miles of state roads in Eldred.
It's less developed than eastern Monroe County, offering a slower pace and stronger connection to land and legacy. Its villages - especially Kunkletown - serve as cultural anchors, with local events and community organizations preserving the Township's character.
Eldred Township was named for Nathaniel B. Eldred who served as a Monroe County judge from 1849 to 1853. In May of 1851, the residents of the area now known as Eldred Township, petitioned the courts to create a new township. On September 23, 1851, the residents received their wish when Eldred Township was carved from part of Ross Township.
